‘The end sounds like the angels opening up heaven… Should we say euphoria? – Julius Eastman on Femenine

Femenine is the only known part of the twofold 1974 composition by composer Julius Eastman, the companion piece Masculine being lost. Re:ply to all presents a live performance of this masterwork by nine musicians of the Rotterdam based Doelenensemble in collaboration with dancers of the Lloyds Company. The piece has had an important role in the Eastman-revival and is a striking celebration of the joys of life whilst infusing it with the pain of existence. It seems fitting with Eastman’s personal history that the piece is an extensive exploration of the chaotic and an ode to unwavering resilience.
