Choreographer Christian Guerematchi shows Space is the Place, an Afro-futurist science fiction film from 1974, accompanied by an introduction and a short talk afterwards. The film follows avant-garde jazz musician Sun Ra who plays himself (and who wrote parts of the film) on a cosmic journey to save African Americans on earth, Oakland California to be precise. The movie follows a non-linear storyline and incorporates elements of social commentary, science fiction, and live performances by Sun Ra’s Akestra. Directed by John Coney, the film is a psychedelic, avant-garde exploration of race in America, and considered to be the foundation of modern Afrofuturism.
