Filmdirector Mel-Anin introduces the 1978 film The Wiz by Sidney Lumin and will give a short talk afterwards. The film is a dynamic adaptation of the Wizard of Oz and based on the broadway musical of the same name. Set in 1970’s New York, the land of Oz is transformed into the urban surroundings of Harlem, Brooklyn and Coney Island. Starring superstars Diana Ross and Michael Jackson and a soundtrack that mixes soul, funk and gospel, the film has gained a cult following over the years. The film represents an important milestone in the history of African-American cinema.
