Wild Combination: A portrait of Arthur Russell (2008) by Matt Wolf. The film is curated by pianist Vivianne Cheng

Wild Combination is a visually captivating portrait of Arthur Russell, an avant-garde composer, singer-songwriter, cellist, and disco producer. Despite his untimely death from AIDS at 40 years old, Russell left behind a rich legacy of music that pushed the boundaries of both pop and abstract art. Russell was a contemporary of Julius Eastman, they shared a mutual admiration for each other’s work and collaborated on several musical projects.
Through rare archival footage and interviews with key figures in Russell’s life, such as Philip Glass and Allen Ginsberg, Wolf presents a moving and powerful narrative that honors this influential artist.
